Compulsory shopping is banned in one-day trip

Travel agencies in Beijing will no longer be allowed to include any
compulsory shopping, extra service charges or medical consultancy
services as part of their one-day package city tours.
The tough restriction came in line with a new sample contract for one-day
tours in and around Beijing, jointly issued Monday by the Beijing's
Administration for Industry and Commerce and the Beijing Tourism
Administration.
Travel agencies will be punished by fines of 50 to 100 percent of travel
fees as compensation to tourists if they violate the new rule by
arranging such forbidden services, or force tourists to accept these
forbidden services.
Liu Lili from Beijing Tourism Administration explained that travel
agencies are required to adopt the sample contract in all one-day trip
services, which will also work as a basis to curb the illegal one-day
trip services.
So far, Beijing has 60 formal travel agencies providing one-day tours. A
relevant survey shows that over 15 percent tourists chose illegal one-day
trip services in Beijing last year, while only about 2 percent of them
pick formal travel agencies.
According to China Travel Service, the one-day trip service in Beijing
commonly charges between 160 Yuan to 180 Yuan. Following certification
for a one-day trip, the fee will probably rise to around 240 or 300 Yuan.
Gu Xiaoyuan, deputy director of Beijing Tourism Administration explained
that since there wouldn't be any fraud and additional fee charges,
tourists wouldn't actually be paying much more than before.
