A source told the Daily Star: "Star Trek was the start of the huge sci-fi
craze and Tom is fascinated by all of it."

After months of speculation The Bank, situated just inside the east gate
of Workers' Stadium, finally opened its doors to the masses. Rising from
the ashes of the old Maggie's, the 1,500-capacity structure tells you it
means business even before you have a chance to saunter across the
threshold. As overwhelming inside as it is from the outside, this
nightclub-cum-restaurant-cum- opulent KTV lounge is three floors of
hedonistic excess made of marble. No expense has been spared in designing
(and redesigning) this post-colonial, neo-gothic, mirrored, velveteen,
and bejeweled behemoth, which makes you wonder if Narcissus moonlighted
the club's interior design. The altar-like DJ booth, surrounded by
gargantuan video screens, bespeaks The Bank's music-orientated mission
statement, cemented by the KME sound-system-China's first-and the promise
of big-name spinners.

?

The second floor is a more relaxed lounge affair, complete with a balcony
overlooking the dance-floor, while the third is devoted to six VIP rooms.
Then there is the tranquil, titanic terrace, replete with stylized sofas
and a serene roof garden, which is one of Beijing's best. The drink menu
is befitting of such a grand venue-Grey Goose (RMB 80), MUMM Champagne by
the glass (RMB 120), and L'Or de Martell for RMB 18,800, by the bottle.

?

In the words of Club Director Ivan Zhang, "The Bank is a bar and club
intent on quality. We want to provide an international feel and great
music so that the Chinese can really understand Western nightlife."

'Sienna Miller's got no talent,' blasts Lindsay Lohan

(Daily Mail)
Updated: 2007-08-06 09:53

Lindsay Lohan has blasted Sienna Miller as a "no talent crackhead" while
claiming herself to be the "greatest actress in the world".

The troubled Hollywood star, who was arrested last month on drink-driving
and drug charges, also unleashes a torrent of abuse against fellow actors
Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightey.

The 21-year-old calls Johansson "fat and ugly" and Knightley is a "flat,
shallow, cardboard cutout of an actress," according to reports in the
National Enquirer.

Rivals? Lindsay Lohan has blasted Sienna Miller as a 'no talent crackhead'
according to reports in the National Enquirer

Lohan has a history of falling out with young female Hollywood stars -
from Hilary Duff to Paris Hilton - no actress seems to have been spared
her wrath.

She was due to work with Knightley earlier this year in Dylan Thomas
biopic, The Best Time Of Our Lives, but allegedly dropped out over
financial negotiations.

Miller stepped into the role at the last minute and developed a close
bond with Knightley.

?

According to Lohan, Keira is a 'cardboard cut of an actress',
while Johansson is 'ugly and fat'

Her feud with Johansson first surfaced last year when she co-starred with
the actress's ex-boyfriend, Jared Leto, in Chapter 27. She allegedly
scribbled obscenities about Johansson on the wall of a New York nightclub.

Lohan was arrested for investigation of misdemeanor driving under the
influence and with a suspended license, and felony cocaine possession.

Besides her personal troubles, Lohan is also struggling with her career.

Despite winning high praise for her performances in Bobby and Georgia
Rules, her latest film, I Know Who Killed Me, has been dismissed by
critics as one of the worst of the year.

Hilary Duff serves food to the homeless

Hilary Duff

Hilary Duff is being kept busy by her hectic schedules. Has been tapped
to host this year Teen Choice Awards, she was seen Wednesday August 1st
dished up chicken stew for hundreds of homeless men in Edmonton as part
of her personal campaign to raise awareness about poverty and hunger.

Pop singer Duff was seen serving hot lunch and dessert for an hour at a
downtown emergency shelter, before then visited the nearby headquarters
of Hope Mission, a Christian social care agency. "The Hope Mission was a
priority and we wanted to lend a hand," so she said after completing her
kitchen shift. "It's so rewarding for me. I love to get down and dirty
and help out."

Her stop at the Hope Mission was just one example of Duff's charity work,
which includes a partnership with lead organization Canadian Harvest, for
which she has raised more than 125,000 pounds of food on her past 2
Canadian tours.

Duff kicked off the Canadian leg of her North American Dignity tour
Saturday July 28th in Winnipeg. In Edmonton, she was soliciting
non-perishable food donations from concertgoers, which will be
distributed in the city through the food-raising charity Alberta Harvest.

Spielberg may resign as Olympic adviser

(AFP)
Updated: 2007-08-02 08:43

Beijing's Olympic organizing committee said Wednesday it didn't know
Hollywood director Steven Spielberg might be planning to resign as an
artistic adviser to the 2008 Games.

Spielberg sent an open letter to President Hu Jintao in April urging
China to take a harder line against Sudan over the Darfur crisis. Last
week, ABC News and other U.S. media cited the director's spokesman Andy
Spahn as saying Spielberg was considering dropping out of the Olympics
because of China's inaction during the crisis.

At a news conference Wednesday, the director of cultural activities for
the 2008 Beijing Olympics organizing committee was asked to confirm
Spielberg's possible exit.

"I was not aware of that," Zhao Dongming said. "I had not heard of that."

More than 200,000 people have died and 2.5 million have been uprooted in
the ethnic conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan.

China, which imports two-thirds of Sudan's oil and sells arms to
Khartoum, has been criticized for supporting the African nation. It has
opposed United Nations sanctions.

The U.N. unanimously agreed Tuesday to send a 26,000-strong peacekeeping
force to Darfur by the end of this year.

Beyonce's stage fall captured on video

(Daily Mail)
Updated: 2007-07-27 19:24

Singer Beyonce Knowles has taken an embarrassing head-first tumble down
12 stairs during a performance in Florida.

The star was performing her track Ring the Alarm when the accident
occurred. While some onlookers say they spotted blood on her leg, her
spokesperson insists she was not injured.

Falling star: Beyonce was not injured during the incident

Despite the fall, Beyonc茅 barely missed a beat and continued performing
the rest of her set.

Afterwards, she begged the crowd: "Don't put it on YouTube!"

Her pleas went unheard and footage appeared across a number of sites and
news channels within hours.

One audience member told US magazine People: "Everyone gasped. But she
got up right away and acted like nothing happened. I don't even think she
missed a word of the song!

"Everyone started cheering her on, because she recovered like a real
professional."

Her spokesperson said in a statement: "Beyonc茅's fall on stage last
night in Orlando during her performance was a mere spot on an otherwise
sensational, flawless show."

"It was a case of her coat's hem getting caught in her shoes, but Miss
Knowles picked herself right up, without missing a beat, showing to all
that she is the best."

Flashing the plastic to repent for my sins against an ailing mother

By Charlie Shifflett (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-07-26 15:32

Forgive me, Mother Earth, for I have sinned. Every morning, while
brushing my teeth, I open the water tap approximately 30 percent of the
way while massaging my gums and polishing my not-so-pearly white teeth.
If my breath still stinks after the first brushing, I do it again.
Meanwhile, the water is running right into the drain. I've tried to
reform by turning off the water while I brush, but - shame on me - I
usually forget.

It gets worse, Mother Earth. Instead of leaving my air conditioner
running at the prescribed 26 C, I've dropped it to 24. This is in direct
disobedience to local regulations, I know, but I just can't help myself.

Actually, I've been ignoring regulations ever since I was a kid. To keep
the electricity bill down during the summers in Florida, my mom would
always keep the house a little too warm for my liking. When she wasn't
home, I'd adjust the thermostat to make the house a little cooler and - I
know, shame on me - expel even more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere,
increasing the chances that some monster hurricane would one day strike
my Florida home, plucking the driveway basketball hoop from its cement
mooring like a daisy from a flower garden.

Actually, I could go on, but you know who I am, Mother Earth. You peek
into my window in the morning when I stir. Your eyes - as bright as the
sun - see through my dust-covered curtains. You hear the music playing
too loudly, the TV jabbering when I'm not even watching. You see the
lights on in every room.

That's why I come to you now - to bring you this offering. I've found a
way to atone for my sins. Thanks to the booming carbon trade industry,
companies like TerraPass.com have emerged, allowing me to repay the debt
I owe you by replenishing the earth with trees and wind-power.

I only need to pull out my credit card.

I've figured it'll cost me $50 a year to cover my driving; $30 to cover
my living; $10 to cover my flying. That's less than $100 a year to erase
my carbon footprint from the planet. I can't be sure the company will do
what they promise with my money, but that's between them and you, Mother
Earth. Who am I to judge?

I believe that in doing this I will finally have done my part to save
this glorious planet - your planet. Actually, that's the brilliant part
of the green industry: I can continue living just as I have in the past
because my CO2 sins will have been washed away with the click of a mouse.

By donating a few dollars to plant trees in Africa or to buy wind-power
in the US Midwest, I - along with other consumers and corporations - can
do good while still maintaining our quality of life.

I'm sure you can understand how hard it is to unlock these chains of
comfort and habit.

Mother Earth, I just hope you'll remember my carbon "offset" purchase the
next time you whip up a storm in the Gulf of Mexico. Please steer it away
from my house in Tallahassee. I want to play basketball in my driveway
when I get home.

(China Daily 07/26/2007 page20)

Beckham-mania takes root in California, and beyond

David Beckham has already made a significant splash since arriving in
America's entertainment capital, despite being restricted to a brief
debut for his new team because of a lingering ankle injury.

The 32-year-old, one of the most recognizable figures in the game, has
triggered unprecedented fan interest at Los Angeles Galaxy while making
serious inroads into the glitzy showbiz world of Hollywood.

The England midfielder lit up the Home Depot Center on Saturday when he
finally came on as a substitute for the Galaxy in an exhibition match
against FA Cup holders Chelsea.

Although Beckham was on the field for only 12 minutes, plus four minutes
of stoppage time, every move he made sparked an eruption of cheers from
the capacity crowd of 27,000.

The match, which ended in a 1-0 win for Chelsea, attracted a record
television audience for a match involving an Major League Soccer team on
ESPN of around 1.47 million. Roughly one percent of homes with ESPN tuned
in to watch the action.

One of soccer's most marketable players during his time with Manchester
United and Real Madrid, Beckham has already made his number 23 Galaxy
shirt the biggest seller in the game.

TAKING ROOT

More than 200,000 replica shirts were snapped up by fans last week as
Beckham-mania took root in Southern California and beyond.

"We have never come across anything like it," Chris McGuire, sports
marketing manager for adidas soccer, said in a statement.

"At this time, the LA Galaxy David Beckham jersey is the No.1-selling
shirt in the world."

While Beckham's popularity with the fans appears to be soaring to new
heights at the start of his American Adventure, he is also making waves
in Tinseltown.

David and his pop star wife Victoria enjoyed a head start as they live in
a $22 million Beverly Hills mansion not too far from close friends Tom
Cruise and his wife Katie Holmes.

The Cruises gave the Beckhams plenty of advice before their move from
Madrid to Los Angeles and co-hosted an invitation-only, celebrity party
for the English couple on Sunday.

Also hosted by Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith, the party was held
at the Museum of Contemporary Art and attracted film stars such as Bruce
Willis, Jim Carrey, Eva Longoria, Wesley Snipes, Demi Moore and Ashton
Kutcher.

Beckham's long-awaited debut for the Galaxy on Saturday also pulled in
the celebrities with Californian Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, U.S.
actress Jennifer Love Hewitt and English actors John Hurt and Ray
Winstone in the crowd.

MOST COMFORTABLE

For all the hoopla and hype that have surrounded Beckham's much-trumpeted
move to Major League Soccer, he is most comfortable when out on the pitch
with his team mates.

"I just want to be part of the team," he said after being formally
introduced as a Galaxy player.

"The other stuff that surrounds me and that comes with me as a player, I
believe I have always handled in the right way. I've always been in
football to play football."

More than anyone, Beckham knows his honeymoon period is all but over and
that, swollen left ankle permitting, there is much work to be done.

"I don't think I've ever had a more extraordinary year in my life than
this one and this last week has been truly one of the most remarkable,"
he said.

"The attention has been immense, not on just the Galaxy and LA as a city
but on me and my family. It's been incredible.

"But this is where the hard work starts. It's not just about getting the
fans here for an exhibition game, it's about getting them here every time
we play. It'll be a long process but it's one I'm looking forward to."

Be a fan to have a new social life

"2007 Happy Boy singing competition" champion candidates Su Xing (L) and
Chen Chusheng (R) receive fans' cheers after a fierce elimination
game in Changsha, capital city of central China's Hunan province, on
Friday evening, July 13, 2007. [Photo: ent.sina.com.cn]?

Popular TV singing contests, such as "Super Girl" and "Happy Boy," seem
to have brought Chinese young people something above sheer
entertainment-they have created them a new type of social life.

Peng Yu, a teenage girl from southwestern Sichuan province, is a huge fan
of Su Xing, who participated in the "2007 Happy Boy" contest launched by
a domestic television station.

Together with 400 some boys and girls from the same province, they formed
a fan club titled "the Sichuan Backup Unit for Su Xing."

Here is Peng Yu's schedule for this summer vacation, a typical one as a
fan.

During week days, Peng Yu is online round-the-clock communicating with
her allies in forums or in ICQ chatting groups. On weekends she goes
downtown to meet them to do promotion activities for their idol.

"Every week I make ten new friends or more, and we have really good time
together," she said.

Peng Yu and her friends should be happy as their icon Su Xing, a
23-year-old R&B lover and returned student from Australia, took the
second prize in the final on Friday evening.

Although the competition has concluded, the fan club members' friendship
will continue.

Jiang Linjuan, who works for a company in south China's Guangzhou city,
is a fan of Chris Li, the winner of 2005 "Super Girl" contest. Recently
she went to a party held by Chris Li's fans in the city.

"There were seven or eight people of us, from teenagers to 40-year-olds
and of varied professions," Jiang recalled. "We spent the time together
in a restaurant eating and chatting like old friends."

"Nowadays young people are mostly from single-child families. Being the
fans of someone brings these lonely children together," Hu Guangwei,
deputy director of the Institute of Sociology, Sichuan Academy of Social
Sciences, was quoted as saying.

Xia Xueluan, a professor at the Department of Sociology, Peking
University, shares the opinion.

"Today's young people lack the sense of belonging," he said. "The fan
clubs provide them with a sort of attachment to each other."

The TV talent shows are weekly elimination games in which the
competitors' performances are measured partly by the votes they received
online and through cell phone SMS short messages. It takes several months
from the general selection to the final.

Learn Mandarin online - Manslaughter game becomes popular

CITYLIFE / Hip & New

Manslaughter game becomes popular
(CRI)
Updated: 2006-05-10 09:29

A trendy psychological game called "Manslaughter" has become so popular
in China, especially among young white-collar types, with some even
developing an addiction to the game.

This is a mentally challenging game played by a group of people. It's
supposed to have one killer in the group, killing one person each round.
And the other are trying to figure out who is the killer.

A university student who is very good at the game named Han Xiaodong says
the most amazing aspect of the game is that it stimulates people's
ability to convince others.

"I like the game very much because it challenges your language and
logical thinking ability. If you are the killer, you try your best to
accuse other civilians, and if you're not the killer, you use your
analytical skills to decide who the killer is, because at the end of the
game you have to make a final decision! Observation is very important!"

As long as there is a group of people, the game can be played anywhere,
in park, on train, or in a cafe. The game has become so popular there are
even theme bars in major Chinese cities like Beijing and Shanghai. People
throng to the themed bars after work to spend hours playing the game,
some so addicted they even stay overnight.

The game is especially popular among white-collar workers. A psychologist
says the role playing game provides a way for them to share an interest
with like-minded people while relaxing, showing off their talent, and
using their imaginations in a visionary way.

However, he also says if people overindulge in the game and focus too
intensely on the exciting fantasy world, they may be prone to develop
some mental problems.

Avert mishap

Comment on "69 coal miners rescued after 3 days" (China Daily, August 1)

It is surely very heartening news, but the thing now is to ensure that
such an accident does not recur. Let's be proactive and forestall the
occurrence of such a disaster again rather than rushing to react to what
has already happened.

Local government

Comment on "To fight pollution, China takes capitalist route" (China
Daily web, July 31)

I think that this is a good tactic. However, leaders of provinces,
townships, and villages who turn a blind eye to pollution, or lie about
the extent of pollution in their areas, should be heavily fined and
possibly removed from office. Only strict and ruthless enforcement of the
rules by the central government will get this (and other flagrant abuses
of the law) under control.

It's time for local government to realize that they are not above the
law, and that they cannot continue to impede the efforts of the central
government.

"Mamma Mia!" to launch Chinese version

(CRIENGLISH.com)
Updated: 2007-07-19 15:57

The global smash hit musical "Mamma Mia!", now showing in Shanghai Grand
Theater on its China tour, is planning to launch a Chinese version, an
official of the theater disclosed on Tuesday.

Hong Kong-based Wen Wei Po quoted the official as saying that the
musical's European production company, Littlestar, has shown a great
interest on a Chinese version of the drama. Discussion on the details,
such as the scenario and the cast, is expected to be carried out after
this performance season ends.

The musical has already been adapted into various languages including
Swedish, Russian, Japanese and Korean during its international tour.

The largest difficulty of the adaptations lies on the translation of
ABBA's songs, a director of the musical said.

Although many suggested retaining the English lyrics, Littlestar believed
singing in a local language would make the audience feel closer to the
show.

"We now need a Chinese 'poet' as good as ABBA," the director said.

The show's current China tour covers Shanghai (in Shanghai Grand Theater
from July 6 to August 2) and Beijing (Poly Theater from August 7 to 19).

French actor Depardieu to be feted by U.S. film society

(AP)
Updated: 2007-07-18 08:25

French actor Gerard Depardieu arrives for a gala screening of British
director
Michael Winterbottom's film 'A Mighty Heart' at the 60th Cannes Film
Festival,
in this file photo from May 21, 2007.[Reuters]

French actor Gerard Depardieu will be honored at this year's salute by
the Film Society of the Lincoln Center, which recognizes the
extraordinary careers of distinguished film artists each year.

About 20 of Depardieu's films will be shown from Aug 3-19 as part of the
tribute, including his Academy Award-nominated role as the literary hero
in "Cyrano de Bergerac."

"Depardieu's to European cinema in the '70s what Brando was to American
cinema in the '50s," Kent Jones, associate director of programming at the
Film Society of Lincoln Center, said in a statement.

"He was able to connect to and represent the whole gamut of European
males: tough guy, stud, intellectual, bourgeois, anarchic rebel,
hedonist."

Jones said Depardieu, 58, was also an emblematic figure in American
moviegoing, seen by anyone with adventurous tastes in the '60s, '70s and
'80s.

"Doing this series now is not just saluting him, its saluting an era of
moviegoing."

The actor had a rocky start in life, according to a biography released by
the New York-based society.

He was born in Chateauroux, France, the third of six children to an
alcoholic father, and ran away from home.

He worked odd jobs before starting to steal which led to a short stay in
prison and it was when a friend supposedly convinced Depardieu to
audition for the Theatre Nationale Populaire in Paris that he found
acting.

He broke into both film and television in the mid-1960s by playing
character roles that somewhat reflected his disreputable past but his
career really took off in 1974, when he starred in Bertrand Blier's
"Going Places," about two loafers pillaging their way across France.

He has won a list of awards during the career including a Cannes Film
Festival acting award, an Oscar nomination for "Cyrano de Bergerac"
(1990), and twice won France's Cesar Award for Best Actor.

In 2005, Depardieu announced his intention to retire from screen acting
-- but has appeared in nearly 20 films since then and is scheduled to
perform in eight films in the next two years, said the Film Society of
the Lincoln Center.

The actor also has a mix of business interests including two Parisian
restaurants, a vineyard in the Loire valley, Romanian textile and telecom
outlets and Cuban oil wells.

Since 1972, the Film Society of Lincoln Center has created an Annual Gala
Tribute, beginning with the effort to return Charlie Chaplin to the
United States from Switzerland.

Past honorees include Fred Astaire, Alfred Hitchcock, Elizabeth Taylor,
Bette Davis, Jack Lemmon, and Diane Keaton.

Dating & Mating Rituals…Decoded

When it comes to flirting in the hopes of finding The One, what works? The direct approach, “Hey, I couldn’t help but notice your beautiful eyes?” Subtle glances? Playing hard to get? These were among my questions as I headed out on a field trip with Dr. Helen Fisher, a professor of anthropology at Rutgers University, and the author of Why We Love: The Nature and Chemistry of Romantic Love. Dr. Fisher has devoted her career to understanding human mating rituals—and her knowledge applies perfectly, she says, to today’s pickup scene. “Even in this modern age, humans adhere to courtship strategies that are as old as the hills, and used throughout the animal kingdom,” adds Fisher. And that’s why she and I headed out for a night of cafĂ©- and bar-hopping, to observe what works (and what doesn’t) when it comes to mingling and the human mating call. Six hours, two coffee shops, and one (or was it two?) bars later, we had some interesting findings. Come along with us as we make the rounds—and learn!

Destination #1: The classic coffee bar for flirting how-to’s
Our first stop: Starbucks. To me, the woman in the green shirt is sipping a cappuccino and catching up with friends. But in Helen Fisher’s eyes, something much more primordial is happening: The woman in green is on the hunt, and has already staked out her quarry—a tall man in a blue-checkered button-down sitting next to her.

“See how her body’s twisted toward him in the ‘crouch’ position, with her hands near her face when she laughs?” Fisher whispers to me as she sips her chai latte. “It’s the ‘broken wing’ tactic. She’s sending a subtle signal his way that says, ‘protect me.’ Men love that.”

Indeed, Fisher says that secret signals of sexual attraction are at work whenever people mingle. The way you sit down with your cappuccino or Corona begins the courtship dance. “The first thing all animals do when attempting to find a mate is to set up their territory,” says Fisher. People who place laptops on their table or their coat and bags on a chair next to them, she explains, are attempting to carve out a perimeter so they can proceed to the next stage of courtship: attracting attention.

“Notice how that guy’s stirring his drink with his entire arm?” Fisher points out. “He’d never bother to do that at home.” The man then casually stretches his arms back in a gesture Fisher calls the ‘chest thrust,’ to appear as large and formidable as possible. “Pretty much all courtship postures fall into two categories: attempts to look big and attempts to look little,” she explains. Traditionally, men generally try to look big, or ‘loom,’ while women try to look small, or ‘crouch.’ The direction someone’s feet are pointing can also convey interest: Smitten women turn pigeon-toed; men pivot outward. “Feet can be a real giveaway,” says Helen. “People are quite conscious of their body and hands, but forget to control their feet.”

So, how do hopeful singles transition from a ‘loom’ or ‘crouch’ to an actual pounce? For women, Fisher suggests trying the tried-and-true ‘five-part flirt.’ “You catch someone’s eye, cock your head to the side, raise your eyebrows, look down, then away,” she explains, adding that women are usually more socially adept than men and thus better at initiating courtship. But at some point, she observes, a transfer must happen: In other words, the man has to pick up the ball and make his move.

Destination #2: A quirkier coffee bar for connection lessons
Dr. Fisher and I decide to move along to a coffee bar with more of a lounge-around atmosphere. Here, we observed some more mating rituals: “See those two girls over there? I think they want to be picked up,” Dr. Fisher says, nodding toward two bubbly twenty-somethings in cool, dressed-down clothes and knit caps, who are sitting in the corner of Grey Dog’s Coffee. While hardly dressed to impress, the two young women are nonetheless employing a different courtship strategy called “handicapping.” “They’re saying, ‘I’m so cool I don’t have to show off,’” Dr. Fisher explains.

While four men seated nearby can’t help but notice the two giggly girls, no one works up the guts to break the ice, and their reluctance is understandable: After all, what can you say to a complete stranger that won’t come off as corny? Fisher suggests trying questions (“Excuse me, do you know a good place around here to grab dinner?”) and compliments (“That’s a great laptop case. Where’d you get it?”) since both require a response and get you engaged in the next stage of courtship: ‘grooming talk.’ “It’s called ‘grooming talk’ because it really doesn’t matter what you say,” Fisher says simply. “If someone’s interested in you, they’ll keep talking.”

As the conversation heats up, a behavior called “mirroring” can kick in, says Dr. Fisher, furthering the connection. When mirroring, couples sip their coffee or cross their legs in unison, subtly mimicking each other’s movements. “It’s a very powerful way to develop rapport, since it actually helps your brain waves get in synch,” Dr. Fisher explains.

Singles should also keep an eye out for ‘intention gestures.’ “Basically that means the other person wants to touch you, but since she's not sure if you’re receptive, she'll rub her own arm or leg,” says Fisher.

We notice a couple in the corner, plying one another with forkfuls of cake. This is more mating in action, says Dr. Fisher. To further forge a bond, couples may engage in ‘courtship feeding’—each offering the other a sip of tea or a bite of his or her food. “Nuptial gifts of food are common among many animal species,” Dr. Fisher notes. “When a male chimpanzee offers a female a piece of sugar cane, she’ll copulate with him and then eat the sugar cane. Humans don’t move that quickly, but we all know there’s no such thing as a free lunch!”

While both men and women respond similarly to many courtship cues, one area where they’re wired very differently is eye contact. To prove her point, Fisher gestures towards a man who’s moved his chair so he can sit next to a woman rather than across from her. “That’s because while women gain intimacy from face-to-face interactions, men would rather avoid it—they find it uncomfortable, even invasive,” she explains. The reason for this dates back to the dawn of mankind, when males were forced to face their enemies, but sat side by side with their friends. It’s also why, these days, men love nothing more than sitting at a bar with their buddies watching the Rams vs. the Redskins, while women love nothing more than staring into their amour’s eyes over a candlelit dinner. “When couples fight over these types of differences, they’re also fighting millions of years of evolution,” Dr. Fisher explains. “Men and women are fundamentally different in many ways, and nothing’s going to change that overnight.”

Destination #3: A busy bar on Friday night for the laws of mating
We decide to see how the courtship dance looks when in a more ‘intense’ pick-up environment—a bar called Peep. As we sit down, Dr. Fisher points out that clearly, the couple sitting next to us is in love. They’re mirroring each other’s movements, ‘courtship feeding’ off each other’s cocktails, and displaying other tell-tale signs of a honeymoon period. Even so, their mating dance is far from over, says Dr. Fisher. At this point, keeping the person they’ve got, or ‘mate guarding,’ becomes a priority, and this pair illustrates this principal perfectly. “Now, normally the man would offer the woman the seat against the wall to signal he’s protecting her,” says Dr. Fisher. “But in this case, he’s in the back seat and she’s sitting facing him with her back to the room. It could be due to what she’s wearing.” The clothes in question? A camisole with a plunging neckline that, had the woman been seated facing the crowd, would have probably had every guy in the vicinity eyeing her. “By dressing that way, she’s asking to be mate guarded,” Dr. Fisher explains. “And maybe that’s why he took the back seat: so she attracts less attention.” Such displays of possessiveness are hardly unnecessary or “Neanderthal,” as some people might put it. One recent study found that 60 percent of men and 53 percent of women admitted to ‘mate poaching,’ a practice of stealing partners who are already taken. While it’s distressing to think that someone we love could be so easily ensnared by new prospects, Dr. Fisher points out that a little competition also pushes us to become more caring, attentive, and in short, better mates.

In fact, as we look across the bar, we see this principle in action: A woman in a slinky tank top, jeans, and stilettos who’s flirting with two men. “She’s giving them equal attention,” Dr. Fisher notes. “Since she obviously hasn’t made up her mind which one she likes, both of those men are working really hard.” We head home before finding out which man, if either, wins in the end. But it gets me wondering: Does courtship really boil down to winners and losers? Is the game of love really that cutthroat rather than warm and fuzzy? “The game of love is not nice,” Dr. Fisher says, “but then again, you’re playing for the biggest stakes in town. Nothing is so important.” And after listening to Dr. Fisher call the play-by-play on our night out on the town, I feel like my skills are definitely ready for the high-stakes game of romance.
