Beckham to tattoo baby daughter's name on arm

(ANI)
Updated: 2007-06-07 18:28

London - Posh Spice has revealed that fans of hubby David Beckham won't
be seeing any more tattoos on his left arm, for he's hoping to fill that
space up with the names of their future kids.

Posh admitted that the rumours that Becks was keeping his arm free for
the names of their future progeny.

"Yes it's true. I think David is keeping his arm free for - hopefully -
the name, or names, of our daughter or any other children we have," the
Daily Mail quoted Posh, as saying.

Victoria also revealed that the couple is hoping to add a girl to the
family sometime in the future. For the moment however, they're just a tad
too busy with the move to LA.

"Of course we would absolutely love to have a little girl but at the
moment our lives are so full. So much is going on, we're just
concentrating on now and the move to LA," she said.

"But if in a few years' time when Cruz is all grown up, and we're so
blessed, then we can start thinking about having more children," she
added.

And, the man who has tattooed Becks' for the past seven years, also
admits that the reports are true. "David told me he has left his entire
left arm for a daughter. He has been saving it in case they had a girl.
It would be dedicated to the new baby," he said.

Malloy also claimed that far from hating the look, Posh is a big fan of
her hubby's tattoos.

"Victoria likes the tattoos, I know she likes them. When I did the (most
recent) one she was there, she watched it all and she liked it," Malloy
revealed.

Hilton completes first night in LA jail

This video image released Monday June 4, 2007 by TMZ.Com shows hotel
heiress Paris Hilton, second left, accompanied by her mother Kathy, left,
sitting in the back of an SUV vehicle late Sunday June, 3, 2007 arriving
at the Men's Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles to turn herself in.
[AP/TMZ]

LYNWOOD, Calif. - Paris Hilton completed the first night of her probation
sentence as morning arrived Monday in her new surroundings -- a Los
Angeles County jail cell that will be her home for much of this month.

The 26-year-old hotel heiress worked the red carpet at the MTV Movie
Awards on Sunday afternoon, then traded her strapless designer gown for a
jail-issue jumpsuit and a solitary cell.

Hilton entered the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood just
after 11:30 p.m. to serve 23 days for violating her probation in an
alcohol-related reckless driving case. She is due out on June 26.

"It's hell. Go to jail and you'll find out," Alicia Singleton, 23, of
Oakland, said Monday as she left jail after serving five weeks for a
crime she refused to describe.

Singleton said she and other inmates were asleep when Hilton checked in.

Around 7 a.m., they learned Hilton was there when they watched the TV
news. To most of them, it was no big deal. "Oh, Paris, Paris, Paris. If
you do the crime you've got to do the time," Singleton said.

Hilton surrendered after a surprise visit to the MTV awards.

"I am trying to be strong right now," she told reporters on the red
carpet. "I'm ready to face my sentence. Even though this is a really hard
time, I have my family, my friends and my fans to support me, and that's
really helpful."

Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said Hilton was easy to work with.

"Her demeanor was helpful. She was focused, she was cooperative," he said.

Hilton, accompanied by her mother, Kathy Hilton, surrendered at the Men's
Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles just after 10:30 p.m. She was then
escorted to the women's facility in Lynwood, where she was booked,
fingerprinted, photographed, medically screened and issued an orange top
and pants, Whitmore said.

Hilton's booking photo shows her wearing what appeared to be a V-neck
shirt, eye makeup and lip gloss that highlighted a slight smile. Her
blond hair was draped over one shoulder.

Sheriff's deputies had released a mug shot taken last year after Hilton
was arrested by Los Angeles police. That photo showed her smiling, in
full makeup and with her head tilted to the left, with her blond hair
flowing over her bare shoulders.

The mistake was made because the sheriff's department and LAPD mug shots
are in the same database, Whitmore said. "It was an inadvertent release."

Hilton, star of the TV reality series "The Simple Life," is being housed
in the "special needs" unit of the 13-year-old jail, separate from most
of its 2,200 inmates. The unit contains 12 two-person cells reserved for
police officers, public officials, celebrities and other high-profile
inmates. Hilton's cell has two bunks, a table, a sink, a toilet and a
small window. She does not have a cellmate.

Like other inmates in that unit, Hilton will take her meals in her cell
and will be allowed outside the 12-by-8-foot space for at least an hour
each day to shower, watch TV in the day room, participate in outdoor
recreation or talk on the telephone. No cell phones or BlackBerrys are
permitted in the facility, even for visitors.

It will be pretty stark for her, but it will be a step up from the
general population.

Teresa Jones, 50, of Lancaster, who wasn't clear about what she served
time for, called the jail "so filthy it's worse than skid row."

At check-in, jailers hand out a pamphlet on infections, which are common,
she said.

"That place is hell, it's awful. Life is easy compared to this," Jones
said.

The jail, a two-story concrete building next to train tracks and beneath
a bustling freeway, has been an all-female facility since March 2006.
It's located in an industrial area about 12 miles southeast of downtown
Los Angeles.

When Hilton was sentenced May 4, the judge ruled that she would not be
allowed any work release, furloughs or use of an alternative jail or
electronic monitoring in lieu of jail.

Hilton's publicist, Elliot Mintz, said he spoke with Kathy Hilton after
she returned from the jail.

"She told me it was very emotional," Mintz said. "She also said that she
feels this will be a time when Paris will be able to think and reflect
and to spend time alone to learn from the experience because in Paris'
life she's never alone there's always a constant chatter around her."

Officers arrested Hilton in Hollywood on Sept. 7. In January, she pleaded
no contest to the reckless-driving charge and was sentenced to 36 months'
probation, alcohol education and $1,500 in fines.

She was pulled over by California Highway Patrol on Jan. 15. Officers
informed Hilton she was driving on a suspended license and she signed a
document acknowledging she was not to drive. She then was pulled over by
sheriff's deputies on Feb. 27, at which time she was charged with
violating her probation.

Katherine Heigl: Washington apologized for slur

(AP)
Updated: 2007-06-01 08:46

Katherine Heigl arrives to the premiere of her new comedy film 'Knocked
Up' in Los Angeles in this May 21, 2007, file photo.[AP]

NEW YORK - Katherine Heigl says castmate Isaiah Washington apologized to
her on the set of "Grey's Anatomy" after she publicly denounced his use
of an anti-gay slur.

"Isaiah thanked me, which I didn't understand," the 28-year-old actress
tells Entertainment Weekly. "He was almost grateful. I don't know Isaiah
well, but he takes his work seriously and he loves his character."

Washington came under fire for using the epithet at the Golden Globe
Awards in January while denying he'd used it previously against fellow
"Grey's" star T.R. Knight. Heigl, who plays outspoken Dr. Izzie Stevens
on the hit ABC medical drama, says she was "furious and frustrated" at
the time, so she leapt to Knight's defense.

"He made a big mistake, and it was thoughtless and boneheaded, and I
think he's very sorry and embarrassed," she says in the magazine's Friday
issue. "This is something that will have changed the scope of his life."

Heigl, who stars in the new Judd Apatow-directed comedy "Knocked Up,"
speaks out in the interview, too, about her protracted contract
negotiations with ABC. The bottom line, she says, is that she wants "the
same respect they're showing the other actors."

And she says she doesn't like the label that seems to go along with a
woman who stands up for what she wants.

"In this town, women who don't just snap and say, `Okay, yessir, yes
ma'am,' start to get a reputation for being difficult," she says. "But
within the last five years, I've decided it's not worth it to me to be
pushed around so much."

Heigl, who calls "The Notebook" one of her "all-time favorite movies,"
says she'd rather laugh than get too serious when it comes to movie roles.

"I just want to play happy people," she says. "I'm a commercial kind of
gal, and yeah, I would love to do a `Monster,' but I don't have any grand
aspirations to do my Academy Award-winning movie. I love Kate Winslet,
but I know I couldn't have her career."

Shrek the Third

Updated: 2007-05-07 16:39

Being king isn't for everyone--especially if you're a prickly ogre who
smells like the shallow end of a swamp. When Shrek married Fiona, the
last thing he wanted was to rule Far Far Away, but when his
frogger-in-law, King Harold, suddenly croaks, Shrek is quickly fitted for
the crown. Now, unless the reluctant would-be king can find a suitable

Shrek didn't have enough on his plate, Princess Fiona has another little
surprise on the way. With his head spinning and his belly in knots, Shrek
sets off on a quest to find the only other possible heir to the throne,
Fiona's long-lost cousin Artie, an underachieving medieval high schooler.
While the ogre is away, his old nemesis Prince Charming rears his
handsome head and returns to the kingdom of Far Far Away with redemption
on his shallow little mind. Even with Donkey and the ever-so-suave Puss
in Boots by their side, it's going to take an ogre-sized effort--and a

Artie to save the day and find their own "Happily Ever After."

Chinese Online Class - Romanian abortion film wins Cannes prize

Romanian abortion film wins Cannes prize

(AP)
Updated: 2007-05-28 08:45

Romanian director Cristian Mungiu (C) holds the Palme d'Or award for his
film '4 Luni, 3 Saptamini Si 2 Zile' ('4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days') as
he is watched by British actress Charlotte Rampling (L) and hugged by
Jury President British director Stephen Frears during the awards ceremony
at the 60th Cannes Film Festival May 27, 2007.[AP]

CANNES, France - A harrowing film about illegal abortion in Communist-era
Romania beat 21 movies by well-known directors such as Quentin Tarantino,
Ethan and Joel Coen, and Wong Kar-wai to win the Cannes Film Festival's
top prize Sunday.

Romanian director Cristian Mungiu's low-budget film, "4 Months, 3 Weeks
and 2 Days," depicts the horrors a student goes through to ensure her
friend can have a secret abortion.

Mungiu, who was awarded the Palme d'Or by actress Jane Fonda, said he
didn't even have enough money to shoot the film just six months ago. He
hoped the win would inspire other "small filmmakers from small countries."

"You don't necessarily need a big budget and big stars to tell a story
that everyone will listen to," said 39-year-old Mungiu, the first
Romanian to win Cannes' top prize.

The films shown at Cannes' 60th anniversary edition ran the gamut of
weighty subjects, from death and loss to abortion and aging. The winners
of the awards, announced by jury president Stephen Frears (director of
"The Queen"), reflected the darker themes.

Japanese director Naomi Kawase's "Mogari No Mori" ("The Mourning Forest")
took the festival's grand prize, the second-highest award, in a surprise.
The film is about two people a retirement home resident and a
caretaker at the center struggling to overcome the deaths of loved
ones.

The prize for best director went to American Julian Schnabel for his
French-language film "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly," based on a
memoir by a French magazine editor who became paralyzed after a stroke
and learned to write again by painstakingly blinking his eyelid.

The movie is Schnabel's third, after "Basquiat" and "Before Night Falls."

The jury awarded a special prize to director Gus Van Sant for his
impressionistic "Paranoid Park," which depicts a teenage skateboarder
whose life is turned upside down when he accidentally kills a security
guard. Van Sant, who won the festival's top prize in 2003 for "Elephant,"
recruited untrained actors on MySpace.com and shot the film in just a few
weeks.

Two films shared the jury prize: "Persepolis," Marjane Satrapi's moving
and humorous adaptation of her graphic novels about growing up during and
after Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution, which she co-directed with Vincent
Paronnaud; and "Stellet Licht" ("Silent Light"), Carlos Reygadas' tale of
forbidden love set among Mennonite farmers of northern Mexico.

Acting honors went to Russia's Konstantin Lavronenko, who played a
troubled husband "The Banishment," a drama about a couple whose marriage
disintegrates during a stay in the countryside. The prize for best
actress went to South Korea's Jeon Do-yeon, who played a widow struggling
to cope with her husband's death in "Secret Sunshine."

German writer and director Fatih Akin's "The Edge of Heaven," a
German-Turkish cross-cultural tale of loss, mourning and forgiveness, won
the prize for best screenplay.

Several high-profile movies that screened at Cannes were not in the
running for prizes, including Michael Moore's "Sicko," "Ocean's Thirteen"
starring George Clooney and Matt Damon, and "A Mighty Heart," featuring
Angelina Jolie as the widow of slain journalist Daniel Pearl.

The Coen brothers' "No Country for Old Men," a bloody, darkly funny tale
about a ruthless killer in Texas, was hailed by critics but snubbed by
the jury. Other films up for the top prize included Tarantino's "Death
Proof," Wong's "My Blueberry Nights," and David Fincher's "Zodiac."

In a big weekend for Romania, another film from the country took honors
in a secondary competition called "Un Certain Regard." Director Cristian
Nemescu died in a car crash last year at age 27, leaving his "California
Dreamin'" incomplete. Jurors had initially decided not to judge the film,
about U.S. soldiers in a small Romanian village, but changed their minds
when they saw it.

On Saturday night, festival organizers screened the late Henry Fonda's
"Twelve Angry Men," then surprised his daughter, Jane Fonda, with a
special lifetime achievement award at a gala dinner.

Festival President Gilles Jacob recounted Fonda's career highs and lows,
including her controversial trip to North Vietnam in 1972, joking that he
never thought the festival would honor someone who had been "spied on and
hounded by the FBI."

The 69-year-old Fonda, visibly moved, put the focus back on her father,
responding in excellent French, "For my father, his films were his way of
representing justice, quality and democracy." She added her hope that one
day, "the United States will again become the country that he stood for."

Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes

One is not enough for the couple and thus they are planning to have
another one. Tom Cruise and wife Katie Holmes reportedly are planning to
have another baby.

TomKat, who have already had a one year old daughter Suri Cruise, sparked
such rumors by converting one of the seven bedrooms in their new $35
million Beverly Hills mansion into a nursery, thus prompted rumors that
they are preparing for a new arrival.

"Tom told Katie how much he loves their little girl and how he wants to
have another baby when she's ready," Life and Style Weekly magazine
quoted a source as saying. "She told him she's ready. And in his
typically enthusiastic fashion, Tom's moving full steam ahead preparing
for a new arrival."

Cannes' glittering 60th edition opens

(AP)
Updated: 2007-05-17 09:34

British actor Jude Law, left, and American actress-singer Norah Jones
arrive for the screening of the film 'My Blueberry Nights,' at the 60th
International film festival in Cannes, southern France, on Wednesday, May
16, 2007.[AP]

Cannes celebrated its 60th edition Wednesday by inviting a screen
newcomer to open the film festival: singer Norah Jones, playing a
heartbroken lover in a role that forced her to cry on command and spend
hours smooching co-star Jude Law.

Their movie, "My Blueberry Nights," by director Wong Kar-wai, was the
first screening in an 11-day fete of cinema, parties and dealmaking.

The festival has an extra dash of glitter this year: Stars slated for
appearances include George Clooney, Sharon Stone, Brad Pitt, Leonardo
DiCaprio, Al Pacino and Angelina Jolie. Movies on Cannes' lineup range
from "Ocean's Thirteen" to Michael Moore's "Sicko," to films from Russia
to Mexico to South Korea.

Jones wore a strapless midnight blue gown, and Law and Wong wore black
sunglasses, as they climbed the red carpet. Other stars at the premiere
included China's Gong Li, India's Aishwarya Rai and France's Juliette
Binoche. Diane Kruger ("Troy") was the first German to open the ceremony,
where American director David Lynch ("Blue Velvet") screened a surreal
film short set in a movie theater.

Cannes strives to achieve just the right blend of Hollywood glitz and
international arthouse films, and the opening night movie certainly fit
the bill.

Hong Kong director Wong ("In The Mood for Love") is a Cannes favorite,
and "My Blueberry Nights" is his first English-language movie. Besides
Law and Jones, the cast includes Natalie Portman, who plays a Nevada girl
on a gambling streak; David Strathairn, in a terrific turn as an
alcoholic policeman; and Rachel Weisz as his unhappy wife.

Jones stars as a New Yorker who hits the road on a curative cross-country
trip after being dropped by her boyfriend. She had never acted before,
but Wong heard her sultry voice and knew he had a role for her.

"Basically, when you listen to her voice only, without seeing her face,
you can have a kind of a story out of it," he said.

Jones said she was terrified when they shot her first scene.

"I remember the first take we did, my voice was really high," she said,
finishing her sentence with a squeak. "I was just terribly nervous, and
Kar-wai came over and patted me on the back and I relaxed a little."

But Wong said Jones grew more at ease over the shoot she impressed him
in a scene where he asked her to cry.

"We rolled the camera and she cried, and after that I said, `Well, it's
great,' and she said, `Do you want one more?'" Wong said.

The movie's turning point is a kissing scene in a diner, with Law licking
drops of ice cream from Jones' lips as she sleeps. Jones said Wong had
very particular ideas about what he wanted. "We shot it a long time,"
Jones said.

The actors hadn't seen the movie yet as they walked down the red carpet.
Earlier in the day, it garnered muted applause at a showing for critics.

Cannes was founded in 1939 as an alternative to the Venice Film Festival
in Mussolini's Italy but almost as soon as it opened, the festival was
canceled because World War II broke out. Cannes did not get going in
earnest until the 1950s.

The festival is looking back at its glamorous history this year with a
photo exhibit on the beach. There's Cary Grant in black tie, Natalie Wood
and Warren Beatty hailed by paparazzi and Kim Novak in a limousine, with
raindrops sparkling on the window like diamonds.

But the celebrations are more than just nostalgia. For a feature-length
homage to the movies, it commissioned 35 shorts from directors including
Wong, Roman Polanski ("The Pianist"), Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu
("Babel"), the Coens ("Fargo") and Wim Wenders ("Wings of Desire.")

Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese ("The Departed") has been enlisted
to give a master class on moviemaking.

Pacino, Clooney, Pitt and Matt Damon will promote threequel "Ocean's
Thirteen," DiCaprio brings his environmental documentary "The 11th Hour,"
and celebrity super couple Pitt and Jolie will appear he for "Ocean's
Thirteen," she for "A Mighty Heart," in which she plays the widow of
murdered Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl.

Those films are screening out of competition, as is "Sicko" by Moore,
whose "Fahrenheit 9/11" won the top prize at Cannes in 2004. But his look
at the U.S. health care system is sure to be one of the festival's most
talked-about movies. The U.S. Treasury Department opened an investigation
into a trip Moore took to Cuba accompanied by a group of ailing Sept.
11 rescue workers during the film's shooting.

Enjoy a comfortable life in an economical way

(chinadaily.com.cn)
Updated: 2007-05-10 08:57

"Pinkee" is a Chinese catch phrase which refers to a person who is
willing to share things with others. It's a term frequently used by young
Chinese who seek to live a comfortable life and save money too. Pinkees
will share things from apartments, cars, restaurant bills and even
shopping coupons. In this way they can get what they want at a minimum
expense.

Here are some examples of some young people and their pinkee lifestyles:

Xiaoyu graduated from college last year and is now working as a technical
assistant in an IT company. After tax, he makes about 3,500 yuan each
month and lives in a two-bedroom apartment near his office. The rent is
2,300 yuan per month, a bit high to Xiaoyu. So he asked his classmate
Xiaozhou who happens to work nearby to share the living space with him.
Each of them pays half of the rent and half the utility fees. According
to Xiaoyu, apartment sharing not only helps him save money, but having a
roommate offers him companionship.

Comment: It's better to share an apartment with someone you already know,
such as a friend, a classmate or a relative. If such a person isn't
available and you have to share an apartment with a stranger, then you
may need to sign a contract beforehand stipulating how much rent and
utilities each should pay and the rules of the house.

Yuxin works in the fashion industry and she is a shopping expert. Though
she earns a satisfactory salary, making every penny worthwhile is still
her priority. One day she came across a promotion by the skin care
product Olay: clients who buy products worth over 880 yuan can have an
Olay trial set consisting of six products. So she called a friend who is
an Olay fan friend and told her this news. They two made a list of the
Olay products they wanted. In the end, Yuxin spent 500 yuan buying what
she needed, and her friend spent 800 yuan. They got the trial set as well
as a chic bag.

Comment: Shoppers can share their coupons. Say a department store offers
coupons worth of 600 yuan for every 900 yuan spent. You spend 900 yuan
and it covers all you need, but then what to do with the 600 yuan
coupons? One solution is to sell them for say 300 yuan. Then both of you
can almost enjoy a 40 percent discount.

Wangdan, who works as an editor in a website company and lives far from
her office, so commuting is a problem. She can't afford a private car and
taking a bus takes too long and is too crowded. Taking a taxi saves time
and is more comfortable, but it is too expensive. So Wangdan had the idea
of finding someone who drives a car to work and whose route is the same
as hers. She logs onto an online forum and puts up a post looking for
such a person. Soon she gets many replies, interested in her offer of
giving them money for rides. Then she talks with each of these
respondents through instant messenger and by that same afternoon, she
goes back home by car.

Comment: This practice is good for both the passenger and the car owner.
The former enjoys the comfort and convenience a private car offers
without paying too much, while the latter finds some people to share the
cost of petrol. Besides, when they get familiar with each other and
become friends, they may also ride the car for an outing together on
holidays.

Xiaozhao started working this year and is a secretary in a trade company.
She likes reading fashion magazines. But fashion magazines are expensive
and buying many of them would take a heavy hit on Xiaozhou's wallet. So
she finds a colleague who shares the same hobby as her. They two buy one
magazine each and read it, then exchange it. In this way, they spend
money for one magazine but read two. If you get to know someone really
well, you may even start sharing various cards, like facial cards, gym
membership cards, and even credit cards!

Xiaowang and Xiaozhang share an apartment and last month they started
sharing a broadband Internet service. Just after paying some money for a
router and connection lines, they managed to connect onto the Internet
through the same broadband connection. Xiaozhang worksduring the day, and
Xiaowang does the night shift. So when connecting to the internet, each
of them is actually enjoying a bandwidth costing 900 yuan per year by
paying just 450 yuan per year.

Compulsory shopping is banned in one-day trip

(CRI)
Updated: 2007-04-25 11:05

Travel agencies in Beijing will no longer be allowed to include any
compulsory shopping, extra service charges or medical consultancy
services as part of their one-day package city tours.

The tough restriction came in line with a new sample contract for one-day
tours in and around Beijing, jointly issued Monday by the Beijing's
Administration for Industry and Commerce and the Beijing Tourism
Administration.

Travel agencies will be punished by fines of 50 to 100 percent of travel
fees as compensation to tourists if they violate the new rule by
arranging such forbidden services, or force tourists to accept these
forbidden services.

Liu Lili from Beijing Tourism Administration explained that travel
agencies are required to adopt the sample contract in all one-day trip
services, which will also work as a basis to curb the illegal one-day
trip services.

So far, Beijing has 60 formal travel agencies providing one-day tours. A
relevant survey shows that over 15 percent tourists chose illegal one-day
trip services in Beijing last year, while only about 2 percent of them
pick formal travel agencies.

According to China Travel Service, the one-day trip service in Beijing
commonly charges between 160 Yuan to 180 Yuan. Following certification
for a one-day trip, the fee will probably rise to around 240 or 300 Yuan.

Gu Xiaoyuan, deputy director of Beijing Tourism Administration explained
that since there wouldn't be any fraud and additional fee charges,
tourists wouldn't actually be paying much more than before.

Beijing travel agencies to receive star rating

(CRI)
Updated: 2007-04-16 09:36

By this autumn, travelers in Beijing will be able to choose travel
agencies as easily as they would a star-rated hotel, tourism authorities
announced on Thursday (April 12).

Director of Beijing Tourism Administration, Du Jiang, introduced the
Classification and Appraisement on Travel Agencies at a press conference
and detailed how it will function. The first group of travel agencies to
receive star ratings will be announced in September.

Beijing's travel industry has grown quickly, now with 797 travel agencies
offering 222 international travel services and 575 domestic. For 2006,
total revenue for travel agencies in Beijing is 31.7 billion Yuan, an
increase of 43% with a net gain of 2.4 billion, an increase of 64% during
the same period last year.

But behind the impressive gains, establishing a standard credit system of
travel agencies has been in demand. With thousands of agencies to choose
from, customers are hard pressed to make the best choice.

Arctic monkeys are stating the freezing obvious

By Graham Bond (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-03-13 11:45

Northerners probably don't need reminding that it's been a bit nippy
recently. Those who still find themselves shoveling snow or thawing
numbed limbs may be consoled to hear that their pain was shared by the
citizens of the south. In fact, things were so bad down here that the
Hong Kong Observatory felt moved to issue one of its knee-trembling Cold
Weather Warnings for the benefit of the uncomprehending populous.

"Members of the public are advised to put on warm clothes," entreated the
experts as the mercury plunged, dipping into a knowledge base so
specialist that, apparently, it takes four years to earn a degree in
meteorology.

"If you must go out, avoid prolonged exposure to wintry winds," added the
guardians of public health, now assuming the impatient tone of a nagging
mother-in-law.

"If you know of elderly persons or people with chronic medical conditions
staying alone, call or visit them occasionally to check if they need any
assistance," went the final piece of priceless advice.

Anyone who caught the news or watched the press conferences might have
assumed that at that very moment small children were ice skating across
Victoria Harbor, marveling at the world's newest glacier out of which
only the tip of the 88-storey IFC 2 tower was now poking.

Alas no. Unlike Shenyang or Dalian in Northeast China, Hong Kong didn't
find itself victim to vicious blizzards or experiencing power cuts during
Arctic temperatures. The problem in well-fed, well-sheltered, well-rich
Hong Kong was that the temperature fell below about 15 C. In Hong Kong
and I quote this construes a health "threat" and thus the well-honed
warning mechanism kicked in.

It reminded me of British autumns past where, despite absolute seasonal
predictability, fallen leaves on railway tracks would cause the train
network to literally grind to a halt, and with it the entire economy.

If it's cold, do we seriously need telling to wear clothes? If it's a bit
windy out, should we really be frightened into staying inside? Now I'm no
expert and I certainly haven't got a degree in meteorology but it all
seemed a little over the top. I don't need to have spent several years in
university to know that most human beings have a little thing called a
nervous system which rather puts Hong Kong's Cold Weather Warning to
shame.

It's an amazing contraption, developed over several millennia, and
pre-programmed into every new born baby for absolutely free. Here's how
it works: If it's hot, you sweat and remove superfluous layers of
clothes. If it's cold, you shiver and crawl under the duvet. If someone
cuts your arm off, your scream, then call for a doctor. And if someone
fires a machine gun, you duck, or run. Despite what nagging
mother-in-laws and Hong Kong Observatory officials may think, we don't
always need reminding of the bleeding obvious.

And now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to bed. It's freezing in this
apartment, and for some reason I've never quite got round to buying a
heater.

Chinese Pinyin - Anna Nicole Smith laid to rest near son

ENTERTAINMENT / Gossip

Anna Nicole Smith laid to rest near son

(AP)
Updated: 2007-03-03 09:04

NASSAU, Bahamas - Her coffin covered in a pink rhinestone-studded
blanket, Anna Nicole Smith was buried Friday as she lived: extravagantly
dressed in a designer gown and surrounded by a small cadre of competing
admirers.

The reality TV star was mourned at a lavish memorial service, but while
her body was laid to rest, the fight over the former Playboy Playmate's
baby daughter and a potential multimillion dollar inheritance
remains very much alive. Her companion Howard K. Stern, her mother Virgie
Arthur and her former boyfriend Larry Birkhead are battling for custody
of 5-month-old Dannielynn.

Smith's mahogany coffin, topped by the pink blanket with rhinestones
spelling out her name, was carried into Mount Horeb Baptist Church as
hundreds of tourists and fans watched from behind steel barricades
guarded by police. Some in the crowd cried out "Anna! Anna! We love you!"

Inside the church, Smith's favorite color was on display. Pink roses and
flower arrangements lined the aisle and adorned the altar, where
organizers placed two photos of the blonde bombshell including one
showing her in a shimmering white gown and striking a Marilyn Monroe-like
pose.

There were fewer than 100 guests at the service, even though an organizer
said about 300 including an "Entertainment Tonight" camera crew had
been invited. Rock guitarist Slash, formerly of Guns N' Roses, was among
the guests, and country singer Joe Nichols performed two songs, guests
said.

Arthur, Birkhead and Stern took turns eulogizing the 39-year-old Smith,
who died last month in a Florida hotel.

"It was pretty tough. The funeral itself was a mixture of emotions, there
was a lot of crying and laughing," Birkhead, wearing a pink tie, told
MSNBC after the service.

He also referred to comments Stern reportedly made at the service about
the legal fight over custody of Smith's daughter.

"We were all given equal amount of time and that's how he chose to spend
his time. I wouldn't have used my time that way. ... It doesn't make
anything better," Birkhead said.

Kathryn Beranich, a supervising producer on Smith's reality TV show, said
she thought Smith would have been happy with the ceremony. "I think she
wouldn't have been pleased with the division between her biological
family and the extended family she created and loved," she told The
Associated Press.

Smith was later buried next to her 20-year-old son, Daniel, who died in
September of an apparent drug overdose while visiting Smith in the
hospital after she gave birth. "Entertainment Tonight" said she was
buried with an urn containing some of the ashes of her late husband,
Texas oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II.

Onlookers, a mixture of Bahamians and tourists, spontaneously broke into
the hymn "When Peace Like a River" as the white hearse and the rest of
the funeral cortege reached the cemetery. Some in the crowd booed Smith's
mother when she arrived, though she had been cheered earlier by the crowd
outside the memorial service.

In a last-minute bid to halt the burial, Arthur, who wanted her daughter
buried in her native Texas, sought to have Supreme Court Justice Anita
Adams grant her custody of Smith's body, but the Bahamian judge denied
the request just before the service began, according to Lilliemae
MacDonald, the judge's secretary.

Smith was buried in a custom-made gown, said organizer Patrik Simpson of
Beverly Hills, Calif.

Some tourists were amazed at all the security and media.

"I'm just incredulous at all the fuss," said Christie Rathgaber, a
59-year-old nurse from Columbus, Ohio. "She was not a world figure. She
was not a queen. She was not a president. She was not anything. ... It's
just way over the top."

The legal wrangling that began with Smith's death won't end with the
funeral: There is pending legal action over custody of her daughter, who
stands to inherit a fortune, and over ownership of a Bahamas mansion
Smith used to establish residency in the islands last year.

An official inquest into the death of Daniel Smith in the Bahamas is also
pending.

Dr. Joshua Perper, the Broward Country medical examiner, said he will
announce Anna Nicole Smith's cause of death next week. She died on Feb. 8
in a Florida hotel room. "This was a complex case," Perper said. "It was
an unusual case from a medical point of view."

Smith married Marshall in 1994 when he was 89 and she was 26. She had
been fighting his family over his estimated $500 million fortune since
his death in 1995. In May, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Smith could
pursue her claim in federal court.

Guidebook to 2007 Beijing temple fairs

(chinadaily.com.cn)
Updated: 2007-02-17 09:35

The spring holiday can be more than banquets with families and friends,
lazing around on sofas watching TV soaps and surfing the Internet. There
are plenty of activities that happen during the spring festival, such as
temple fairs.

As an important form of folk economic and cultural activity, temple fairs
are where people trade, entertain and worship. As the name suggests, the
origin of temple fairs is closely related to temple activities. They used
to be held only during temple festivals or special temple fair days and
were complemented with some business activities. As time went by, the
religious color of temple fair faded and temple fairs became more and
more like flea markets for common folks.

In 2007 in Beijing, temple fairs will have many different themes,
including the Olympics at Longtan Temple, traditional Chinese costume
parades at Daguanyuan, a garden modeled after the garden in the classic
Chinese novel A Dream of Red Mansions, and a spring festival folk culture
exhibition at Yuyuantan Temple.

Longtan Temple Fair

This year's Longtan Temple Fair is taking the Olympics as its theme.
Famous Chinese Weichi chess players Wang Runan, Hua Yigang and Xiejun
will lead a team of brilliant Chinese chess players who will meet fans
and play chess with them. Excellent judo and tae kwon do practitioners,,
boxers and Olympic weightlifting gold medal winners Liu Chunhong, Shi
Zhiyong and Wangxu will also have exchanges with sports fans.

Time: February 18- February 24
Location: Longtan Park, No.8, Longtanlu, Chongwen District

Daguanyuan

annual Yuanfei Xingqin parade, in which people will wear traditional
Chinese festival costumes. A traditional wedding ceremony (Baoyu
chenghun) and a traditional birthday ceremony (jiamu heshou) will also be
performed.

Some Chinese directors are planning to shoot the Chinese classic A Dream
of Red Mansions as a soap opera and they have conducted a nationwide
casting call. . Some of the candidates will also be present at this
temple fair.

Time: February 18- February 23

District

Speak Chinese - Sneaky way to beat the rush hour

ENTERTAINMENT / Hot Pot Column

Sneaky way to beat the rush hour

By Graham Bond (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-02-06 10:28

It was the strangest thing. There I was, enjoying a leisurely morning
stroll to work when my reverie was shattered in a barrage of blasts from
a particularly dirty-sounding car horn. The source of the driver's
irritation was, apparently, me.

This isn't the strange part, of course. I fully understand and accept the
law of the road here in China: If your vehicle is bigger than the
person/vehicle you are jostling with, it's your right of way.

Never mind that I was minding my own business, walking in a
pedestrianized area, bothering nobody.

No, I understand the way it works. If you are driving a haulage vehicle
approaching a crossing where a pensioner is attempting to cross the road
before the green pedestrian light expires, it is positively your duty to
issue a loud blast on the horn before accelerating sharply.

I appreciate the subtleties of this principle, and am clear how it may be
applied all the way down the food chain. Big trucks have more rights than
small trucks, small trucks take preference over large Buick saloons
which, in turn, boss humble Volkswagen taxis who tend to take out their
frustrations by sending motorcyclists swerving for cover. It's the law of
the jungle. And it's bad news for those who walk.

Anyway, I digress. What was unusual in this instance was not that a car
was beeping me for the heinous crime of attempting to reach my office by
the only pedestrian means possible. No, it was the car itself that caught
my attention.

For one, it was bright yellow. Even more quirky were the words printed on
the side: Emergency Earthquake Rescue. I was momentarily shocked. The
office block that now reared up in front of me looked sound enough from
the outside but I wondered if there had been some kind of terrible
internal collapse overnight.

Would I walk in to find the graveyard-shift Ayis fighting for life under
the wreckage of computer monitors and photocopying machines? I chastised
myself for hesitating and stepped aside instantly.

My panic, however, subsided a few moments later when a middle-aged lady
emerged from the back seat of the rescue vehicle. There were no masks,
oxygen tanks or pick-axes. Instead, she swished her hair, slung a handbag
over her shoulder as she headed into the building for another day at the
office.

This was a new one, even for me. I know that a police vehicle with
flashing lights and car-load of passengers does not necessarily denote
the successful apprehension of a criminal syndicate.

On the contrary, the crimes of the kind of hooligans who ride in the back
of police cars are often so minor that the uniformed drivers feel able to
drop their captives off in choice city-center locations (cinemas,
supermarkets, restaurants) and bid them farewell with a wave.

However, I expect more of my Emergency Earthquake Rescuers. Until my
Internet connection is fixed, I must insist those in the earthquake
business refrain from chauffeuring their wives to work.

Chinese language - Michael Douglas is a 'Babe Magnet', says pal

Michael Douglas is a 'Babe Magnet', says pal

Updated: 2007-01-17 14:00

Washington: Veteran actor Danny DeVito has a special name for fellow star
Michael Douglas -'babe magnet'.

DeVito, who roomed with the Basic Instinct star in the 1960s in New York,
said that he had been fortunate that he shared an apartment with Douglas,
for he had reaped the fruits of the actor's ability to attract women.

The 'Twins' star however refused to go into details as to which of
Douglas' many girlfriends he had managed to lure into his bed, for he
says the actor is still "very sensitive".

"We lived together while I was in my twenties and it was fun. Did I ever
nick any of his women? Oh yeah, but he's very sensitive about that so I
can't go into detail," Contactmusic quoted him, as saying.

"Seriously, though, I've always been fortunate enough to be close to babe
magnet - and Michael and I always had a great time together. And it's
definitely true what they say about laughing them into bed," he added.

Chinese Character - Weekend syndrome worries young people

Weekend syndrome worries young people

(CRI)
Updated: 2007-01-08 10:00

Did you have a good weekend or a bad weekend? What kind of weekend did
you have this weekend?

We told you about a month ago about the "weekend syndrome" in which many
young people treaded upcoming weekends cause they weren't sure what to do.

Well, now doctors are saying that no even though some people have found
stuff to do on the weekend, they still suffer from a different kind of
"weekend syndrome." That no matter what they do, they feel like they had
a boring weekend.

A patient named Ms. Han says she always hangs out with friends from many
other circles. Sometimes, they all do stuff together throughout the whole
weekend without stopping. But even so, Ms. Han always feels like she has
had a boring weekend.

To deal with the problem, experts advise single people to make more
friends and develop their own hobbies. Meanwhile, they advise people to
hold moderated expectations about the weekend break, and to avoid making
a too tight of a plan for how to spend their time.
