Anyone been watching this crap, who is the frenchie, his Chinese is good, but almost over the top
with doing the Peking Opera. No one else on that show is good enough to compete with him though, I
know plenty of people who could smoke his skinny...well we won't go there.
What do you guys think of this program? is this french guy the next DaShan? He's tall, white, got
a big nose and a good Beijing accent.

I really wish PPlive was for mac.....
roddy -
Been watching this a bit lately, quite enjoying it - usually get a few laughs per episode and
sometimes it can be very funny. Worth a shot if you're looking for a bit of nonsense, Emule links
for those of you who want them.
imron -
Yeah I bought the box set to this a while back, and am slowing making my way though it. At first I
was put off by the whole costume-drama thing, but then I realised it's a costume-sitcom :-)
roddy -
Is there much advantage in watching them in order? I picked up a 3-dvd set with (I think) 61-80 on
yesterday and watched a couple without feeling I was missing anything, but if it's important I
could hold off till I get hold of the first ones.
imron -
A couple of episodes make back references to events or circumstances that happen in prior
episodes, so although you could watch most of them out of order, there will be a few episodes
where knowing the backstory would be better.
imron -
Oh, and another thing, I think it makes it more interesting when you know the backstory and
history of all the characters.
roddy -
Hmmm, I think I'll keep an eye open for the full set, but keep going with what I've got for now.
Would be better to start from the beginning, but as far as I can see I'm not missing any epic
story arcs.
Anyway, I'm off to 替天行道!
roddy -
I'm enjoying this, will definitely be picking up the entire set if I happen across it. Some of the
stuff cracks me up, and even the duller bits are enjoyable enough to have on in the background.
For some reason my favorite gag so far is the visual one about a minute into this clip - 小贝 is
probably my favorite character.
How much have you seen Imron?
shelloren -
I'm new here, and last year i saw this series and really enjoyed it.
It's nice if u can see it from beginning, it's kind of like soap opera and most of the episodes
can be understood separately.
It's interesting the author used "古文诗句" to name every episode like a "章回小说" .
Furthermore, I really like the names of the characters in it. They're all made up from some
"武侠小说", like 白玉汤 is after 白玉堂, 佟湘玉 is after 金湘玉......
They are living in the ancient time but acting or talking like what we do nowaday, and u can hear
some different kind of accents which make it more funny.
Oh, i'm a girl, so my favorite is 老白, then 吕秀才, then 佟掌柜。 偶地神阿!

I'm new to reading newsinchinese.com and had a quick question. Why, in most cases, is just the
intro to an article annotated rather than the whole thing? I like the website, but seems it would
be even better if the whole articles (which don't tend to be very long) were annotated.

Did you try clicking on "More", below the excerpt, and then on "Full"?
Jonny Wang -
I did, and mostly I get a page with a picture of a girl waterskiing. Eventually though, I realized
there was a link *below* that picture in *tiny* print telling me the full article was ready for
viewing. So, my bad! I now understand how to get the whole article.
But, why the heck no put this link *above* the waterskiing girl, so it'll definitely be visible in
everyone's browser without having to scroll down? Seems more logical to me. Or get rid of the
extra link altogether?
Just a thought.
semantic nuance -
Yes, that's what happened to me too when I clicked 'More'. I did click the link, still I cannot
get the whole article. I've been tried several time, and eventually gave upon it.
trevelyan -
Hmmm... never knew that people had this problem, although I guess having a HUGE photo and
microscopic link telling people their article is ready is a bit of a bad call usability-wise. The
reason we have the interstitial page is basically to help fill the time while the software grabs
the remote page and annotates it.
The system works by grabbing and annotating the Xinhua RSS feed... which is why only a snippet is
annotated to start. When someone requests annotating the full article, the software attempts to do
a screen-scrape of the article on the Xinhua server. Most of the time this works. Sometimes either
(1) Xinhua has moved the article, or (2) the article is in some funky format, and so the scripts
don't work as expected. This is usually what happens when errors get reported....
Working on a new interface that will simplify and unify a couple of the things that are running on
the server (vocab, annotation, newsinchinese). Will attempt to improve on this there....
It's not a great fallback, but if anyone ever has a problem getting the full annotated copy to
load and really wants to read the original Chinese piece, it's always possible to clicking through
"Source" instead of "More". This will load the original article on the Xinhua server assuming it
hasn't been moved....
sui.generis -
I'm guessing they're using a lower screen resolution, maybe 800x600 or something, than normal.
Putting the link topside might not help many people, but I guess there are all types of
configurations out there.
And the extra page, while maybe unnecessary adds character to the whole system. It's a cool
something extra, although I think the waterskiier has been in place for a bit too long now, no?

Could you expand on the discrimination part? Is Mandarin looked down upon in Guangdong?

It's not the language itself, but the users that is discriminated. Rooted in the locals'
mentality, whoever speaks Mandarin got to be a guest worker (外来劳工) coming to the province
for low skilled jobs. Obviously Shenzhen is the only city where Waishengren (外省人) can make
it big in politics and business, hence the respect for the use of the language. That's my
understanding. I could be wrong.
LaVandez -
From my brief time in Shenzhen I woud say that it's Guandonghua - Putonghua - Sichuanhua for
business. Sichuanhua is not so surprising once you realize that many came and are still coming for
the work. At least this is among the business people that I know. Most of the old guard are in
international trade or Hong Kong expats, Putonghua gets you up on the new schoolers, Sichuanhua on
a good portion of the workforce and some midle managers who are originally from places within
Sichuan.

Many MSN services, including Spaces, Hotmail, are now "temporarily" unavailable in China.
Try to log in with proxy or enter "torpark" in google for a search
liuzhou -
Hotmail is not blocked in China. I can access it freely, and a quick check with friends around
China confirms this.
What you are probably experiencing is a simple case of overload. 99% of people on the planet have
Hotmail accounts (or thereabouts!) Of course, the system can't always cope.
There are many small email providers who provide reliable service. Try http://www.
yellowgrape.com, for example.
(BTW, I do maintain a Hotmail address in order to access MSN Messenger. Certainly never use it for
email!)
NateM -
"The Great Firewall of China", as it is sometimes known, isn't enforced uniformly throughout the
PRC. It depends on what firewall software the ISP is running as well as individual security
measures in place at whatever workplace, internet cafe, etc, you may be at.
I have most certainly had times when hotmail was blocked in China, not simply overloaded. There
have also been times when it was freely accessible. I've even had one experience where I was in
one cafe where it was blocked, and walked to another one in the same building and it wasn't: this
situation reversed itself abouta month later!
Overall, of the "Big Three" Western Internet companies, yahoo is probably the most reliable and
least likely to be blocked. Given their track record of helping to catch dissidents, I can't say
that I'm too surprised. That said, there are, as has already been mentioned, plenty of smaller
companies that will be able to give you reliable email service withough you having to worry about
being blocked, and thats probably what you are best off with.
mrtoga -
I have also been having trouble here in Beijing over the last week. I am blocked most of the time,
but am getting occasional access. It is certainly irritating.
I am being rerouted to a URL that contains the name of a company in Shanghai when I type in
www.hotmail.com - can't remember this happening before.
Maybe Bill Gates also insulted Hu Jintao in the US a few weeks ago and this is his retribution
roddy -
Anyone who's being directed to some other URL, rather than getting a standard 'could not be
reached' message, has probably picked up some spyware of one kind of another.
pandaxiongmao -
I know a lot of people here in Kunming that cannot access Hotmail. However, I know people in other
provinces that do not have trouble.
Other services like MSN Spaces work fine here. You might need to login at login.live.com and then
go to your MSN Space, but it is possible to load it.
Crivens200 -
I'm having problems here in Jiangsu province as well. This is definitely being blocked by someone
at the moment - nothing to do with overload. I can get in on a proxy server OK, but what a pain in
the butt.
mrtoga -
I am using an internet cafe for my hotmail account these few days - no luck accessing it. This is
in Beijing. I am surprised so few others are having trouble
badr -
I find Gmail to be quite a bit more reliable than any of the other two. The consensus so far seems
that the best way to access hotmail is by first logging on to your msn messenger; when you do
that, a little box pops up telling you how many new messages you have; click on it.

Here is a fairly objective analysis of the benefits and drawbacks of eating kimchi.
http://english.chosun.com/w21data/ht...606050015.html
Quote:
One drawback is that you need plenty of salt for pickling. For every 60 grams of kimchi during a
meal, you consume 3-4 grams of salt or a total of 9-12 grams of salt a day. Thus eating kimchi can
make you consume more salt than the WHO’s current wisdom recommends, which is 10 grams a day.
Salty food supposedly increases the risk of gastritis, gastric ulcers and hypertension. It is
therefore best to eat kimchi made with the minimum of salt needed to stop it from rotting, while
patients with high blood pressure should reduce their kimchi intake.

PARIS - "Desperate Housewives" star Eva Longoria and basketball ace Tony
Parker married in a civil wedding ceremony on Friday, but well-wishers
and photographers got only a fleeting glimpse of the celebrity couple.
Eva Longoria, star of television series "Desperate Housewives", arrives
at the 4th district city hall in Paris to marry French basketball player
Tony Parker (not pictured) July 6, 2007. [Reuters]
Hundreds of photographers and passersby climbed on to ladders, traffic
bollards and parked scooters straining to spot the couple when they
arrived to be married by the mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoe, in a
Parisian town hall.
The cheering crowd got no more than a quick wave from the diminutive
actress as she stepped from white stretch limousine and a brief, rueful
smile from Parker while the couple's own photographers followed them into
the building.
Boos and catcalls from frustrated cameramen accompanied their departure
an hour and a half later when blacked-out limousines whisked away the
newlyweds and their entourage.
The marriage of Longoria, one of television's biggest stars after the
worldwide success of "Desperate Housewives," and Parker, fresh from his
third NBA championship, has been billed as the celebrity wedding of the
year.

Nicolas Cage releasing new comics line with his son
(ANI)
Updated: 2007-07-05 11:41
Actor Nicolas Cage is releasing a new line of comic books with his
teenage son, Weston Cage.
The six-issue illustrated series 'Voodoo Child' will be released on July
11 through Virgin Comics.
Cage revealed that when he was approached with the idea of launching his
own animated series books, he decided to take his 16-year-old son on
board too.
"I said I didn't have any ideas, but I told them my son might. He has
been drawing comics since he was three. He was a natural to do it,"
Contactmusic quoted him as saying.
'Voodoo Child' is set in the post Hurricane Katrina period in New
Orleans, Lousiana. It revolves around a detective who investigates the
disappearance of several young girls.
The title character of the comic is Gabriel Moore, a child murdered by
secessionist soldiers in the 19th century, who is resurrected by a voodoo
priest.

Furniture firm in top gear
By Zhan Lisheng
Updated: 2007-07-03 06:43
GUANGZHOU: Having won the bid to be the sole furniture supplier for the
2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Hong Kong Royal Furniture Group is in top
gear expanding its production capacity and implementing new marketing
strategies.
"According to the contract with the organizing committee of the 2008
Beijing Olympic Games, we will supply more than 100,000 pieces of
furniture, of the highest standard, for the grand event. We have to gear
up," said Gary Ma, president of the furniture firm.
Headquartered and listed in Hong Kong, the company, with its key
production base in the Pearl River Delta cities of Zengcheng and Dongguan
in Guangdong, is a leading furniture supplier in China.
He said his firm has recently put into use a new production base in the
Pearl River Delta region and will continue its strategy of focusing on
innovative design, quality and brand building.
The products designed for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games will be
available in early August.
"We cherish the reputation as the exclusive furniture supplier for the
Olympic Games and we will step up our efforts to guarantee timely
delivery and quality of our products," Ma said.
The fact that Royal Furniture's products are more environmentally
friendly than the standard set by the Olympic Games has been a trump card
for his firm to beat off the numerous competitors at home and abroad in
the nine-month bidding process, he said.
"The success also speaks volumes about the achievements we have made in
innovation and brand building in the past few years."
He said Royal Furniture has been focusing on innovative design, quality
products and brand building since its foundation in 1994, citing as an
example its strategy to collaborate with Italian designers and home-grown
experts from leading universities in furniture design.
"We own a very large number of patented designs with over 120
prototypes," Ma said.
The strategy to invite Rosamund Kwan, a globally renowned Hong Kong movie
star, to become its image ambassador and to open chain stores across the
nation has helped the firm build up its brand, he said.

PARIS - For Tony Parker, only French-made wedding cakes will do. The NBA
champion, set to marry "Desperate Housewives" star Eva Longoria next
week, is staying coy about plans for the event.
Speaking to reporters Thursday in Paris, the San Antonio Spurs point

"I don't care where I'm going to get married," he said. "It's a girls'
thing." To other queries, he replied: "That's a question you should ask
Eva."
He dismissed one rumor: that the wedding cake would be flown in from the
United States.
"Why take a cake from the United States ... if it is France that makes
the best cakes?" he asked.
While Longoria picked the wedding site - believed to be the luxurious
chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte - Parker said he was taking charge of the food
and music. And that's all he would say.
Parker, who was voted the most valuable player of the NBA finals earlier
this month after the Spurs won their fourth title in nine seasons, wanted
to talk about basketball.
"I think that this is just the beginning," he said. "I still have a long
way to go because my idol is Michael Jordan and he won six titles so I'm
only halfway there."
Looking long-term, Parker said he would base his decisions on fellow
players Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili and coach Gregg Popovich. Parker is
signed with the Spurs through 2009.
"My decisions about the future and where I am going to play and if I'm
going to stay in San Antonio will depend on how long Duncan wants to
play, Ginobili and Popovich."

In this photo released by CNN, Paris Hilton is seen during a taping of
'Larry King Live,' Wednesday, June 27, 2007, in Los Angeles.[AP]
LOS ANGELES - Being locked in a cell was a "traumatic experience" and
something she never expected after driving with a suspended license, a
subdued Paris Hilton told CNN's Larry King on Wednesday.
Letters from fans and supporters from around the world, including U.S.
soldiers in Iraq and people as far away as India, helped her get through
the 23 days in lockup, Hilton told King in her first broadcast interview
since leaving jail Tuesday.
All of the letters were positive, she said, adding that reading them in
her cell sometimes reduced her to tears.
"I've been through a lot," said Hilton, her blond hair cascading across
her forehead. "And it was a pretty traumatic experience, something that I
really have grown from."
Asked why she was going public about her experience, she told King, "I
just want to let people know what I went through."
She added that going to jail was the last thing she expected when
Superior Court Judge Michael T. Sauer ordered her to his court in May for
violating probation in an alcohol-related reckless-driving case.
"I was walking in there assuming I was just going to get community
service," Hilton said. "That's what my lawyer said at the time. So when
he sentenced me to that much time in jail it was shocking because that
doesn't happen, ever.
"It wasn't for DUI, it was for suspended license," she said of her case.
Asked whether she thought she got a "raw deal," she said yes. Still, she
vowed never to drink and drive again.
"I'll never make that mistake again," she said.
Hilton also told King she thought the experience had changed her for the
better.
"I feel like God does make everything happen for a reason," she said.
"And it gave me, you know, a time-out in life just to really find out
what is important and what I want to do, figure out who I am."
She said she is looking at getting involved in a number of charitable
causes, including those helping children.
Asked about her reputation as a party girl, the 26-year-old hotel heiress
acknowledged she likes to have a good time with friends, but insisted
that only represents one side of her.
"I am a social person," she said. "I love to dance, I love to go out, I
love music. But a lot of people don't know that I'm a business person. I
run several businesses."
She noted she has a successful reality TV show, has made movies, recorded
an album and written a best-selling book.
Hilton, who said she supports herself and doesn't take money from her
parents, also acknowledged it may be time to cut back on her partying.
"I'm frankly sick of it," she said. "I've been going out for a long time
now, and yeah, it's fun, but it's not going to be the mainstay of my life
anymore."
Hilton said she has never used illegal drugs although she has been in the
presence of those who have. She also said she has cut some friends out of
her life who were causing her trouble.
She said she eventually hopes to marry and have children.
"When I have a daughter I have a lot of good advice for her," she said.
Hilton laughed with embarrassment when she was shown her mugshot.
Being strip-searched in jail, she said, was "the most humiliating
experience of my life."
Although her fellow inmates were nice to her, Hilton said, she sometimes
had nightmares in which she feared someone would break into her cell and
hurt her.
She called her release from jail "one of the happiest days of my life."
"It's hard to even describe. It was so exciting," she said of walking
past a gauntlet of reporters and photographers to an SUV where her mother
and father were waiting for her.
The messy ponytail and makeup-free face Hilton displayed when she left
the Century Regional Detention Facility were replaced Wednesday with
loose, re-blonded locks and camera-ready blue eye-shadow and pink
lipstick.
Her path to jail began Sept. 7, when she failed a sobriety test after
police saw her weaving down a street in her Mercedes-Benz. Hilton, who
said she was hungry and on the way to get a hamburger, pleaded no contest
to alcohol-related reckless driving and was sentenced to probation for
three years.
In the months that followed she was stopped twice by officers who
discovered her driving with a suspended license. The second stop landed
her in court and then in jail.

Pnyin - Willis resurrects `Die Hard'
ENTERTAINMENT / Review
Willis resurrects `Die Hard'
(AP)
Updated: 2007-06-26 13:51
"Live Free or Die Hard" is the sort of movie you approach like last
year's "Basic Instinct 2" or "Rocky Balboa."
You go in expecting the worst and figure you'll at least get some laughs
out of seeing an aging protagonist embarrassingly trying to reclaim old
glory.
Luckily for Bruce Willis and the audience, his die-hard cop still has a
lot of yippee-ki-yay in him, nearly 20 years after the first "Die Hard."
This fourth installment in the franchise, the first since 1995's "Die
Hard With a Vengeance," is the sort of generally welcome surprise that
"Rocky Balboa" turned out to be, a reacquaintance with an old friend you
didn't think you would like anymore, but do.
Let's be clear. "Live Free or Die Hard" is silly, outlandish and
painfully implausible, and it grows more so as director Len Wiseman revs
up the climactic action sequences to preposterous extremes.
Yet for a pure summer power trip, it's a decent throwback to the
pure-brawn heyday of Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger, an agreeable
respite from today's cartoonlike ballets of computer-generated action.
This time out, Willis' John McClane still wisecracks, but he's much more
a stoic hard case than the yammering clown of earlier years. Divorced and
disillusioned, McClane still takes his job as a New York City detective
seriously, and he does it well.
One night, while staking out his college-age daughter, Lucy (Mary
Elizabeth Winstead), to make sure her date keeps his hands to himself,
McClane is dispatched to pick up a computer hacker and deliver him to the
FBI in Washington for questioning.
Computer geek Matt Farrell (Justin Long) is one of many digital wizards
the feds want to question after the bureau's cyber-security division is
hacked.
Moments after McClane shows up at Matt's door, assassins bombard the
apartment with gunfire, setting off a long July Fourth weekend for the
cop and the hacker as they chase around trying to stay ahead of the bad
guys and figure out who's behind a computer incursion that cripples the
nation.
Traffic signals go berserk, financial markets crash, airplanes are
grounded, electricity is cut and federal buildings are evacuated because
of false anthrax alarms.
With all their equipment and digital know-how, the feds, led by FBI guy
Bowman (Cliff Curtis), are virtually hapless in tracking down the
mastermind, bitter security expert Thomas Gabriel (Timothy Olyphant).
So of course, it's left to McClane, an analog dinosaur who barely grasps
the concept of cell phones, to hunt the man down, aided by sidekick
Farrell.
Ridiculous as the action scenes are, the early ones are a clever,
thrilling blend of digital imagery and old-fashioned muscle. The first
two-thirds of the movie builds up enough good will that viewers may play
along when director Wiseman (the "Underworld" movies) goes off the deep
end with some insanely excessive stunts in the final act.
Among the highlights is a death-match between bruiser McClane and
Gabriel's lover and accomplice (Maggie Q), a lethal martial-arts fighter.
With McClane taking blows that should leave him for dead, their duel
accentuates the impossible levels to which the filmmakers take their
die-hard notion. McClane is less a human than an unstoppable,
"Terminator"-style cyborg, continually bouncing back with another punch
and a new joke.
Willis shows nothing he hasn't shown a dozen times before, but he does it
all well, delivering steely stares, writhing in pain and complaining in
muttered soliloquy about his lot in life.
He and Long develop a nice father-son camaraderie through their
adventures, while Winstead fills in for the absent Bonnie Bedelia,
McClane's wife from the first two movies, playing the spunky damsel
inevitably drawn into the peril.
Filmmaker Kevin Smith adds an amusing bit part as a distrustful computer
nerd holed up in a "command center" in his mom's basement.
While Olyphant is adequate as the ruthless, calculating Gabriel, he
suffers a similar fate as William Sadler and Jeremy Irons, the villains
of the second and third "Die Hard" flicks: Namely, that no one seems like
a truly worthy opponent for McClane after the deliciously flamboyant
performance of bad guy Alan Rickman in the original "Die Hard."
"Live Free or Die Hard," a 20th Century Fox release, is rated PG-13 for
intense sequences of violence and action, language and a brief sexual
situation. Running time: 130 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four.

Clooney joins protest over Italy project

Updated: 2007-06-23 09:00
ROME - George Clooney has joined a protest to stop construction of
parking lots and a promenade in the northern Italian lakeside town where
he owns a villa because he fears his presence is turning the quiet town
into a tourist attraction.
Clooney was among some 300 townspeople who signed the petition against
the planned construction in the town of Laglio on Lake Como, according to
organizers.
"Yes I signed it. Almost every member of the town signed it," the
46-year-old actor said in an e-mail to The Associated Press on Friday.
"My concern is that this village that has stood for hundreds of years
would be destroyed simply because I happened to have lived there for the
last six years. I told my neighbors that I would do what they wanted. And
it seemed that they didn't want to demolish the harbor where all the
local fishermen keep their boats," Clooney said.
Clooney, who won an Oscar for his role in "Syriana," said the petition
appeared to have had the desired effect, and that the mayor had announced
Thursday that at least some of the plans which opponents say would
damage the environment as well as the 18th-century old harbor had been
scrapped.
"The petition, signed by three-fourths of the town, seems to have proved
the difference. It's a testament to the character of the people in
Laglio," the actor said.
Tourism to the town has increased since Clooney moved to the area.
Calls to the mayor's office in the Laglio City Hall weren't immediately
returned, but the head of the committee leading the protest said only
part of the project, to cost $18.8 million, had been canceled.
Committee chair Manuela Nuti said she did not immediately know what parts
of the project remained. She praised Clooney's participation in the
protest, saying it was of "extraordinary importance for the cause."
"He always keeps himself informed of things that happen in town," Nuti
said in a telephone interview.

Harry Potter faces evil, teen angst in "Phoenix"
(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-06-20 10:21
TOKYO - Schoolboy wizard Harry Potter battles for recognition as a grown
man in the latest movie of the blockbuster series, in which he finds
himself torn between good and evil -- and experiences his first on-screen
kiss.
"Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," the fifth in the
multi-billion-dollar movie based on the best-selling books by J.K.
Rowling, was screened in Tokyo on Tuesday, ahead of a Japan premiere
later this month that will be the world's first.
Unexpectedly attacked by "Dementors" while tussling with his unpleasant
cousin Dudley in a park near their suburban home, Harry beats the cloaked
monsters off with a spell, a feat that could earn him expulsion from
school for the crime of "underage magic."
Harry must try to have the charges dismissed at a court hearing in London
before he can join his old pals Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley for
another eventful year at Hogwarts school of wizardry.
Now on the cusp of adulthood, Harry not only takes a leading role in
rallying his fellow wizards against the evil Voldemort, but also
experiences a teenage rite of passage when he falls in love with a fellow
pupil.
Daniel Radcliffe, who has played Harry throughout the series, turns 18
next month and is seeking to build a reputation as an adult actor outside
the Potter franchise. He won praise for his performance in a London
theatrical production of "Equus" earlier this year.
But new to the series is director David Yates, a Briton previously best
known for a string of award-winning television dramas.
With a roster of high-profile British actors on hand, from Ralph Fiennes
as Voldemort to Imelda Staunton as the bossy Dolores Umbridge,
distributors Warner Bros. will be hoping to repeat the success of
previous Potter films, which have grossed a worldwide total of $3.5
billion.
Radcliffe and his two main co-stars, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, are to
appear in the final two films of the series, the first of which, "Harry
Potter and the Half Blood Prince," is set for U.S. release in November
2008.
The last book in the series, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," is
set to hit bookstores on July 21 and no date has been fixed for the
release of the film version.

Chinese Character - Art or music? Stones guitarist Ron Wood does both

Art or music? Stones guitarist Ron Wood does both

Updated: 2007-06-18 10:01
PARIS - Chords or brushes, music or painting? Rolling Stones guitarist
Ron Wood does both, and as the group hits Paris this weekend on the
French leg of its European tour, the 60-year-old musician is holding his
first art exhibition in France.
"It's a wonderful blessing for me to be able to express musically and
artistically," Wood, in jeans and sneakers, told AFP. "It's such a great
outlet for feelings to play and to paint."
"In the studio, when you're building a song, when you overdub, it's like
when you're doing a painting, you know, with the background and then
coming gradually to the main picture. The layers are the same."
Around 30 works by the just-turned-60 artist-cum-musician are on view
from June 18 to 29 at the Bailly Contemporain gallery in the heart of
Paris, ranging from oils full of colour and movement to pencil sketches,
etchings and woodcuts.
"It's a big thing for me," he said. "It's my first showing in Paris and
it's been the heart of my inspiration ever since I was a child, all my
influences with the great French Impressionists, Cezanne, George Braque
and the Spanish too, Picasso."
Wood was in the French capital on Friday for the opening of the show,
checking the hangings, making sure it all looked right.
Many are portraits, of the Stones in concert, but also of Jimi Hendrix,
Slash and Bob Marley.
"If you capture the eyes of someone, then everything else follows. That's
the magic in their eyes," said Wood, who began painting when he was 12
and studied at London's Ealing College of Art before joining the Stones
in 1975.
"Basically, I began as a portrait painter. So obviously painting my
contemporaries, musicians, was a way to get a start," he said.
"The movement in simple line is what I try to achieve," he added, "It's
particularly working recently painting on black, the simple white line
means so much more in painting in negative."
Talking about techniques, Wood said "I do everything from small pencil
sketches to huge oil painting. I think my favorite at the moment is
acrylic because it dries quicker," he laughed.
"But in the end it's oil painting and pastel. Oil is so much more
malleable, the paint stays that way for a week, you can work straight
back into it and the paint still moves. You can really explore with oil
much more than with any other medium."
And he not only paints but collects -- works by some of the world's
greatest. He recently bought his first Toulouse-Lautrec print "which I
love" and has a small Matisse drawing as well as etchings by Picasso and
Rembrandt, "tiny ones, beautiful".
And then he has two works by Georges Braque and an extensive collection
of works by Irish painter William Orpen.
Art? he said, "It's a big driving force in my life, I couldn't live
without that.
"I need that time, to be with the paintings to get myself ready for the
next project."
And what do Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Charlie Watts think of his
art? "They don't talk much about it, but they secretly like what I do!
They respect what I do."
Wood said that selling his paintings was not the aim of the Paris show.
"To sell a painting is heartbreak, I don't like to part with them. If I
do sell one, I make sure I have a print on canvas, or a replica for me to
keep!"
"Some of my most favorite paintings have sold, you know, for lots of
money, but I still miss them!" he said.

John Travolta reveals secret to avoiding paparazzi

NEW YORK - John Travolta has found the best way to avoid the paparazzi is
to stay up all night and sleep half of the day, the Hollywood star
reveals in an interview to be published this weekend.
The 53-year-old star of blockbusters such as "Pulp Fiction," "Saturday
Night Fever" and "Grease," told the latest edition of Parade Magazine due
out Sunday that his whole family had adopted the lifestyle to maintain
their privacy.
"We're like the Addams family or the Munsters, living sort of an odd,
nocturnal life," Travolta told the magazine.
"My kids probably stay up too late. My wife goes to bed around three, and
I follow around seven," he told the magazine in an interview conducted at
2am.
"Right now, there's just you and me, and no one interfering in our
space," he said.
